What is NIMMA and what does it do?

As with most organisations today, we have developed a mission statement to summarise what we are about:

"Supporting couples who are united in love across traditional Christian divisions and promoting acceptance of these relationships within Northern Ireland society"

Our News Index provides insight into how we enact our mission.

How NIMMA came to be established in 1974

We were established in 1974 when a number of couples came together to share experiences and found common benefit. Find out more about the origins of NIMMA.

The aims of the Northern Ireland Mixed Marriage Association

  • To provide support, advice and information to couples and families involved in mixed marriage/relationships.

  • To raise public awareness of the issue of mixed marriage/relationships and of NIMMA's support services.

  • To promote and facilitate relevant research into the needs of couples and families involved in mixed marriage/relationships.

  • To lobby policy makers, churches and organisations to address the needs of couples and families involved in mixed marriage/relationships.

  • To develop the capacity of the organisation to enable meeting of the strategic aims.

In pursuing these aims we undertake a range of activities. This includes supporting couples and families, events such as talks and conferences, working with the clergy and influencing housing policy in Northern Ireland. NIMMA continues to grow and develop and is as relevant today as ever, as a recent report highlights.

NIMMA celebrates 30 years of progressive action and support

In 2004 we marked our 30th anniversary with a range of special activities. This included the launching at Stormont of our publication "Mixed Marriage in Ireland". Copies are available in your local library or directly from our office. Find out more about this publication.

How to help NIMMA continue with it's work

If you would like to donate to NIMMA, a registered charity, this will help us continue providing support to people involved in mixed marriages in Northern Ireland.
