There are many segregated housing areas in Northern Ireland and this can cause difficulties for mixed marriage couples. NIMMA offers an advisory service for mixed couples and works with other agencies to address the housing issues which can arise for couples and families in mixed relationships.

NIMMA's role in developing Shared Housing

NIMMA's continual lobbying and our representation on the NIHE Housing Advisory Committee has helped bring about the ‘Shared Neighbourhood Programme’ which will develop 30 shared neighbourhoods across the Province over a three year period. Shared neighbourhoods are where people choose to live with others, regardless of religion or race, in an area that is safe and welcoming to all. NIMMA's determination to pursue shared social housing grew out of our experiences in providing advice and practical help to couples facing intimidation.

Research into Housing and mixed couples

NIMMA and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) have combined to develop a questionnaire to find out more about the housing difficulties which face couples in mixed relationships. The questions cover what people are looking for in housing, how they have gone about meeting their needs and their experiences of the NIHE.

The questionnaires are anonymous, should take around 20 minutes to complete. The form can be accessed here in Microsoft Word, printed and posted to the following address:

NIMMA works for housing suitable for mixed couples

In Northern Ireland segregated housing causes particular difficulties for couples in a mixed relationship. Many couple find it difficult to find a safe place to live. At NIMMA, we have been contacted by many couples who have experienced intimidation or who are unable to find a safe area to start a home or raise a family. NIMMA continues to influence housing agencies for the needs of mixed couple to be addressed through increased housing in mixed areas. The need now is even greater than before as mixed social housing is limited in availability and many couples who would previously have purchased a home in the private sector are finding this is no longer an option due to high house prices across Northern Ireland

Obtain a leaflet on housing without labels

NIMMA and the Housing Rights Association have produced a leaflet titled "Housing Without Labels" which is available from our office. This leaflet is designed to help couples in a mixed marriage who will want to live in an area where both can feel at home.
